Nutritional Quality of Foods Consumed by Gizzard Shad in Western Lake Erie

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) were collected from four locations in western Lake Erie during summer, 1982. The nutritional quality of foods ingested by these fish was examined. Small (<60 mm standard length), age 0 fish consumed mostly zooplankton with high organic (>80% of dry weight) and nitrogen (>6% of dry weight) contents. The phytoplankton and detritus diets of larger, age 0 and adult gizzard shad were of poorer nutritional quality (organic = 10-30%; nitrogen = 0.7-3.1% of dry weight). However, the nutritional quality of these foods was apparently adequate for gizzard shad, as most fish from all locations exhibited good condition and rapid growth rates. Observed differences in size and condition of age 0 gizzard shad among the collection sites may be due, in part, to variation in the quality of foods consumed during the growing season. OHIO J. SCI. 88 (3): 110-113, 1988

Effects of gizzard shad on benthic communities in reservoirs

Effects of gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum on benthic communities in a large southern reservoir (Lake Texoma, U.S.A.) were examined during two field enclosure and exclosure experiments in which enclosures were stocked at high and low densities in 1998 and 1999, respectively. In both years, chironomid abundance significantly increased in treatments that excluded large fishes from foraging on se...

Nutrient cycling by fish supports relatively more primary production as lake productivity increases.

Animals can be important in nutrient cycling in particular ecosystems, but few studies have examined how this importance varies along environmental gradients. In this study we quantified the nutrient cycling role of an abundant detritivorous fish species, the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), in reservoir ecosystems along a gradient of ecosystem productivity. Gizzard shad feed mostly on sedim...

Pigmented Skin Tumors in Gizzard Shad (dorosoma Cepedianum) from the South-central United States: Range Extension and Further Etiological Studies

Previous studies reported skin tumors diagnosed as pigmented subcutaneous spindle-cell neoplasms in 22% of gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) from Lake of the Arbuckles, Oklahoma, USA. Those studies could not confirm chemical carcinogens or retroviruses as etiological agents. The present study reports the neoplasms in 20% of shad from two additional lakes, Lake Murray and Lake Texoma in south-c...

Caloric needs of detritivorous gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum are met with sediment bacterial and algal biomass

The food source of sediment-ingesting animals is a subject of controversy, centering on the notion that the microbial biomass in sediments is insufficient to support caloric need. Gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum are omnivorous, sediment-ingesting fish that frequently impact the trophic structure of temperate lake and reservoir food webs. Prior gut content analyses of this fish have typically d...

Direct and Indirect Effects of Gizzard Shad on Bluegill Growth and Population Size Structure

—Competition with gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum has been shown to influence survival of larval bluegills Lepomis macrochirus as well as growth and size structure of largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides, which prey on these planktivorous species. However, little is known about how the presence of gizzard shad influences bluegills beyond the larval stage. We examined bluegill–gizzard shad int...
